Sunday’s Adventure

We finally got the boat out of hibernation on Sunday and headed out to the Snapper Banks. There were 4 of us on the boat and we took advantage of the trip to put our Sea Angler Gear Fish bag to use. We caught some Vermillion Snapper (B-liners), Black Sea Bass, Red Porgies, Jolthead Porgies, Trigger fish and, of course, Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks. No, we didn’t keep any of the sharks…We kept the bag in the bow of the boat with a 20 pound bag of ice and a nu-ice soft gel bag in it and, as you can see by the picture, still had about 10 pounds of ice in the bag when we unzipped it at the end of the day.

We couldn’t have picked a better day to go out as the ocean looked like a silk sheet blowing in the wind. It was very calm. We saw a couple of large Hammerhead Sharks, some green sea turtles and some Leatherbacks over the course of the day. We made our way to the M2-R6 naval tower toward the end of the day to check for Cobia or Big amberjacks, but there were only a couple of large schools of large Barracuda swimming around the surface around the tower, so we headed in.

I was very impressed with the performance of the bag. It was a little more effort to zip and unzip the bag wide enough to slide the fish inside as compares to lifting a cooler lid, but at the end of the day the difference became clear. The bag was heavy, but I didn’t feel the discomfort I usually feel when sliding a large cooler across the gunnel to get it out of the boat and it was simple to unzip the bag to get at the fish to begin cleaning them. Best of all, a little bit of Orpine boat soap and a hose cleaned the open bag up in about a minute’s time and we were done.
